Markus Lüpertz wurde 1941 in Liberec in der heutiger Tschechischen Republik geboren. Zwischen 1956 und 1963 studierte er an der Werkkunstschule Krefeld und an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Der Künstler beginnt Anfang der 60er Jahre, entgegen aller zeitgenössischer Tendenz zur Abstraktion, Bilder mit einfachen gegenständlichen Inhalten zu malen. Seine betont expressiven Bilder bezeichnet der Künstler 1966 in einem Manifest als 'dithyrambische Malerei', nach dem altgriechischen Gott der Fruchtbarkeit Dionysos. Zwischen 1969 und 1977 entstehen seine 'deutschen Motive' - stilllebenartige Bildkompositionen, die symbolbehaftete Gegenstände der Vergangenheit wie Stahlhelme, Schaufeln oder Fahnen in monströser Größe präsentieren und somit die Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Geschichte fordern. 1970 erhält Lüpertz den Preis der Villa Romana und verbringt einen einjährigen Stipendienaufenthalt in Florenz. 1976 überträgt ihm die Akademie in Karlsruhe eine Professur; 1986 wird er an die Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf berufen, die er zwischen 1988 und 2009 als Rektor leitet.Eine erste Retrospektive seines Werkes wurde 1977 in der Hamburger Kunsthalle gezeigt; gefolgt von der Kunsthalle Bern und dem Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. 1997 wird eine Werkübersicht in der Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung, München, und anschließend in Wuppertal und Barmen gezeigt. Markus Lüpertz lebt und arbeitet in Berlin, Düsseldorf und Karlsruhe. |

The mixed media combines a large-format drypoint etching with luminous watercolours and crayons. Lüpertz colours the etching (which was published in a strictly limited edition of only 15 copies) in large areas. He alternates between more dry opaque colour application and washed sections. Red and blue dominate the composition
His very own formal language of the human body is also evident in this work. The Roman soldier Martinus is depicted at the moment of sharing his coat. With his sword raised, he cuts his cloak for the beggar crouching on the right edge.
The painting was created in the context of a large glass window that Prof. Lüpertz designed for the ecumenical chapel of the hospital Evangelischer Stift St. Martin in Koblenz. Similar to the way the light causes the window of the chapel to flare up, the artist succeeds here in making the graphic glow with the washed colours.
