Features and Remarks
Paladino dedicates this suite to symbols of Christian tradition. "Lacrimose" means "full of tears", a reference to the martyrdom of Jesus on the cross. It is usually the Mother of God, Mary, who is depicted weeping next to her crucified son.
The Italian artist removes this narrative from its context and places its meaning in a larger, postmodern horizon of interpretation with abstract "cross" signs, individual letters and words removed from their context.
The gestures of the human figures in the 6 large woodcuts testify to a deep inner experience - expressive and turned towards the viewer. The artist emphasises the hand in each of the pictures as a sign of human action.
A smaller, enigmatic text image can be assigned to each of the large double sheets over 1 metre wide. All 12 sheets are executed as woodcuts, the title page as a linocut.
The limited edition of only 42 copies was published in London by Waddington Graphics.

Mimmo Paladino was born in 1948 in Paduli, Italy. Paladino attended the Liceo Artistico of Benevento (Benevento Art High School) from 1964 to 1968, when minimalism and conceptualism dominated the international art scene. He played a leading part in the international revival of painting towards the end of the 1970s. His first work, in line with the prevailing conceptual climate at the time, showed an interest in photography, but in 1977 he had already moved on to the creation of two major tempera murals, one at the Toselli gallery in Milan and one at the Lucio Amelio gallery in Naples. In the early 1980s, he began making his first sculptures. Exhibitions followed, one after the other, and in 1981 Paladino took part in 'A New Spirit in Painting', at the Royal Academy of Art in London, and the Paris Biennale.In the following year, 1982, he took part in the Sydney Biennial and the 'Documenta 7' in Kassel.
