Yang Shaobin (杨少斌) wurde 1963 in Tangshan (Provinz Hebei), China geboren. Yang absolvierte 1983 ein Studium an der Polytechnischen Universität Hebei. Im Alter von 29 Jahren zog er in den als 'Artisten-Dorf“ geltenden, in der Nähe von Peking gelegenen Ort Yuanmingyuan (nahe dem Alten Sommerpalast) und galt fortan als einer der Vorreiter des 'Zynischen Realismus“. Spätestens seitdem er im Jahre 1999 sein Land bei der ersten vom legendären Kurator Harald Szeemann geleiteten Biennale von Venedig mit einer Reihe von in roter Farbe gehaltenen Porträts vertrat, auch in Europa zur Spitzengruppe der asiatischen Maler der Gegenwart gezählt. Sein Werk zeichnet sich durch eine sehr breite Stilpalette aus. So nähert er sich z. B. in seinen nach 2001 entstandenen Bildern der traditionellen chinesischen Tuschmalerei an und überraschte im Jahre 2006 mit einer Bilderserie, die das Leben und die Arbeit chinesischer Bergleute thematisiert. The colour screen print, published in 1999 in a strictly limited edition of only 33 copies, was printed at A&Y Studio, the workshop cooperative of Angel Gescheff and Yang Yang in Beijing.
The graphic is inspired by a series of paintings in which Yang envelops visibly wounded and swollen heads in veils of colour. Here, beneath the white paint, we can see the thick red lips of a man – presumably after a hard fight.
The Chinese painter addresses violence in his art – as a physical and psychological experience.
„It’s true that like many people I enjoy watching boxing matches. What fascinates me most is when the arch of the boxer’s eyebrow is smashed, and from the wound comes a sort of viscous, bright material that’s very beautiful when it glistens. To me, it’s like a ferocious animal which is agitated and excited by sniffing fresh blood. This sort of instinctive reaction, I think, is elemental.'“
