Nikolai Makarov wurde 1952 in Moskau geboren. Als Kind eines KGB-Offiziers im Auslandsgeheimdienst verbrachte er seine Jugendzeit in Ost-Berlin, wohin er, nach einigen in der UdSSR verbrachten Jahren, 1975 aussiedelte. Nach einem Studium für Geschichte und Slawistik an der Humboldt-Universität schrieb er sich 1984 an der Akademie der Künste ein und studierte Bildende Kunst bei Werner Klemke. Als dessen Meisterschüler wurden Makarov Studienreisen nach Österreich ermöglicht, die ihm in Wien zum Künstlerkreis um Rudolf Hausner und zu den Vertretern der Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus wie Ernst Fuchs und Friedensreich Hundertwasser führten. 1990 erhielt Makarov die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft. Er gilt heute als moderner Vertreter des Symbolismus. In 2010, the Russian-born painter Nikolai Makarov created a series of ‘nudes’ in which he focusses on the female image in the border area between light and shadow.
Makarov is a modern representative of symbolism - in his high-contrast chiaroscuro paintings, people, objects and spaces are painted in isolation and alienated - by obscuring the concrete forms, he creates a space for the imagination.
„By not only placing the entire figure of his model in the picture, but also by suggesting rather than explicitly depicting individual exposed body parts, consistently omitting references to the real surroundings and placing his nudes as ghostly silhouettes following his direction in a space barely illuminated by soft light, Makarov puzzles their momentary, changing, dissolving appearance.“
