Features and remarks

Here you have the opportunity to acquire an original sculpture by the contemporary Chinese artist Liang Binbin

From 2006, Liang developed his teddy bear series - the deformation of a traditional Chinese birdcage, recognisable by the striking hook attachment, into the silhouette of a sitting bear.

As a child, the artist himself loved this westernised toy. Transformed into an art object, it becomes a surreal and humorous allegory of the emotional worlds and society between West and East.

The artist uses different materials for his series: Model No. 1, for example, is made of pure stainless steel, while other variants use plastic and leather to design the surfaces. The motif offered here, ‘No. 5’, captivates with a visually particularly fascinating surface finish on the stainless steel, which creates a rainbow-like iridescent patina.

Artists with punk roots

„His Teddy bear series is a parody to Western toy, and the Oriental style bird cage hook also reminds the audience the leisure class's decadent life and taste. The playfulness is the association of both elements. The Teddy bear's shape evokes the audience's childhood memory, and the bear's empty body somehow brings sentimental feelings; all these artist's personal emotions, were conveyed to the audience accurately via the artwork.“
