Steven Alan Kaufman wurde 1960 in in Bronx, New York City, geboren und verstarb 2010 in Vail, Colorado.

Kaufman besuchte von 1978 bis 1981 die School of Visual Arts in New York. Nach Beendigung des Studiums hatte er 1982 eine erste Gemeinschaftsausstellung mit Keith Haring. Während seiner Studienzeit traf er auf Andy Warhol, der sein künstlerisches Vorbild wurde, für den er als Assistent arbeitete und mit dem er freundschaftlich verbunden war.

Kaufmann engagierte sich in zahlreichen sozialen und karitativen Projekten. Er setzte sich für die Belange von sozial schwachen Menschen, für AIDS-Kranke und gegen Rassendiskriminierung ein. Mit seiner Stiftung 'Give Kids a Break' unterstützte er unterprivilegierte Kinder und Jugendliche.

The over 1 metre high canvas is a tribute to the Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. In front of the world-famous letters on the hills near Los Angeles, the actress sits in a red dress next to her star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Kaufman painted over the screen print, which served as the starting point, by hand. Blue glitter or mirror sand was also applied to the top of the sky, creating particularly fascinating light effects.

Steve Kaufman's ‘one-offs’ are also known as ‘multiple originals’. No more than 5 to 10 variants of each painting exist, and each was painted in different colours and details, making each one unique.
