Nikolai Makarov wurde 1952 in Moskau geboren. Als Kind eines KGB-Offiziers im Auslandsgeheimdienst verbrachte er seine Jugendzeit in Ost-Berlin, wohin er, nach einigen in der UdSSR verbrachten Jahren, 1975 aussiedelte. Nach einem Studium für Geschichte und Slawistik an der Humboldt-Universität schrieb er sich 1984 an der Akademie der Künste ein und studierte Bildende Kunst bei Werner Klemke. Als dessen Meisterschüler wurden Makarov Studienreisen nach Österreich ermöglicht, die ihm in Wien zum Künstlerkreis um Rudolf Hausner und zu den Vertretern der Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus wie Ernst Fuchs und Friedensreich Hundertwasser führten. 1990 erhielt Makarov die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft. Er gilt heute als moderner Vertreter des Symbolismus. Features and remarks
In 1989, the Russian-born painter Nikolai Makarov created a series of "staircase paintings" that can be understood as a homage to his adopted home of Berlin.
The present work stands out from the series due to its minimalism and opens the possibility for the viewer to dive into a deeper level of interpretation. The hopeful glimmer of light illuminates the completely dark room, which is just recognizable as a narrow hallway. Carefully groping rays of light waft over bare walls through the narrow gap of the open door. Against the background of the year in which it was created, it is thus not only a depiction of a Berlin stairwell, but also a depiction of the social mood of the time.
