Features and Remarks
Schubert is best known for his intricate paper works, created through folding and creasing techniques. He crafts surreal spaces and still lifes that, as expansive installations, can transform entire rooms.
Light and Shadow
Here, we see a staircase leading to an upstairs hallway. The space evokes a bygone era, featuring a wooden balustrade, a paneled wall with decorative molding, and a passageway beneath an arched opening. To the right—when illuminated correctly by light falling from the side—a window appears to lead to the outdoors.
The entire scene has been created solely by folding and compressing the white paper surface. The shifting shadows cast by the ridges and creases sculpt the two-dimensional plane into a shallow relief.
The viewer must move around to unravel the mystery of this piece. And upon closer inspection, one spots a presence defined by absence: the shadow on the stairs—the empty space where a person might be. Extraordinary!
“Simon Schubert views the two-dimensional surface of paper—one of his primary artistic mediums—through the eyes of a sculptor. Like an architect, he constructs stately interiors featuring elements that evoke the 18th and 19th centuries and the Belle Époque, only to create, in the very next image, the winding steps of a spiral staircase that remains familiar to us today. Yet, his architectural drawings and interiors—brought to life solely through a paper-folding technique honed to perfection—lead nowhere. Under the artist’s hands, the pure white of the paper surface unfolds into sculptural, relief-like images.”
