Giuseppe Spagnulo wurde 1936 in Grottaglie (Apulien) geboren und verstarb 2016 in Mailand. Spagnulo bildete sich von 1952 bis 1958 am 'Instituto d’arte per la ceramica“ in Faenza aus. 1959 war er Assistent in den Bildhauerateliers von Lucio Fontana und Arnaldo Pomodoro und machte Bekanntschaft mit Piero Manzoni. Ende der 1960er Jahre begann Spagnulo mit der Arbeit an seinen ersten Skulpturen, darunter die Installation 'Black Panther' (1968-1969) aus Cortenstahl, die 1972 auf der Biennale von Venedig ausgestellt wurde. 1976 war er erneut auf der Biennale von Venedig vertreten, diesmal mit einer Einzelpräsentation, und 1977 wurde er zur Documenta nach Kassel eingeladen. Spagnulos bildhauerischer Stil zeichnet sich durch die massiven Dimensionen seiner Skulpturen aus, die oft aus Eisen gefertigt sind und deren Themen im Allgemeinen abstrakt sind und zum Konzeptualismus tendieren. In den 1990er Jahren begann er, sich auf andere Materialien wie Terrakotta und Stahl zu konzentrieren. Viele seiner Werke sind auf öffentlichen Plätzen in Städten wie Rom, Bochum, Venedig und Mailand zu sehen. Here you have the opportunity to purchase a large-scale sculpture by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Spagnulo.
Approximately 1 meter wide in diameter, the solid steel disc stands free and seemingly static on its narrow edge. The striking object picks up on one of Spagnulo's main themes, which he has been dealing with since the early 1970s: "ferri spezzati" (Engl. "broken irons"). The artist works massive, red-hot heated steel blocks with targeted interventions: splits, bends and kinks.
The sculpture is currently still on display outside a collection in northern Bavaria. Pickup will be in person on site or can be arranged through us at the buyer's expense.
