Walter Dahn wird 1954 in St. Tönis bei Krefeld geboren. Von 1971 bis 1979 studiert Dahn an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf wo er Meisterschüler von Joseph Beuys ist. Seine ersten Arbeiten sind Zeichnungen und Installationen. Bei seinen Werken liegt der Fokus besonders auf dem Zeichnen, der Fotografie und der Erstellung von Videos und Super 8 Filmen. Von 1979 bis 1982 ist er Mitglied der Künstlergemeinschaft Mülheimer Freiheit, der auch Hans Peter Adamski, Peter Bömmels, Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Gerard Kever und Gerhard Naschberger angehören. Der Durchbruch gelingt ihm mit einer Ausstellung in der Torhausgalerie 'Wenn das Perlhuhn leise weint“. 1982 stellt Dahn einige seiner Werke bei der documenta 7 in Kassel aus. 1983 und 1984 erhält er, zusammen mit Dokoupil, einen Lehrauftrag an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Seit 1996 hat er eine Professur an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig in Braunschweig inne. Dahns Bildmotive bestehen zunächst aus figürlichen Darstellungen oder Metamorphosen. So entstehen in der Weiterentwicklung oftmals deformierte menschliche Figuren. Des Weiteren ist seine Malerei durch Spontanität und eine Reduzierung auf das Wesentliche geprägt und weist dadurch Ähnlichkeiten zu den Werken von Beuys auf. Wiederkehrende Themen in seinen Werken sind hilflose, nackte Mensch oder Traum- und Wunschvorstellungen, beispielsweise die Rückbesinnung auf oder in die Natur sowie Sehnsüchte und Ängste des Menschen. As part of the "New Wild Ones", Dahn also engaged with certain forms of primitivism in the early 1980s. Together with Jiří Georg Dokoupil, for example, he created a series entitled "The Africa Pictures".
Magical presence
Here you can see a work from the important "Ex-Voto" series, which Dahn created at the end of the 1980s. Ex-voto figures, also known as votive images, are symbolic sacrificial objects that are offered to a supernatural power or deity on the basis of a vow. Salvation and healing are the particular causes and aims of these offerings. The statuettes and anatomical representations are usually placed in a sacred place.
Dahn was interested in the magical presence of such objects. He was inspired by motifs from non-European cultures, as these were still embedded in an actual practice - examples in Brazil.
Dahn used images from catalogues of ethnographic collections to capture these motifs and transformed them into roughly enlarged raster images, which he then projected onto the canvas and painted. The motifs here are a mask-like head on a red background.
