artist

Features and remarks

Major work by Xia Xiaowan

Created in 1996, this painting makes the viewer lose their footing. The pull of the whirlpool beneath the shimmering surface of the water draws our gaze right into the centre, between the three figures floating weightlessly and helplessly.

The painter comments on the scene with a concise, matter-of-fact sentence, but one that is also laced with a pinch of humour: ‘People, bloated and heavy. Water, clear and flowing.’

The painting was exhibited in 1998 in the artist's first solo exhibition, ‘Looking Up,’ at the Schoeni Art Gallery in Hong Kong and is featured in the accompanying catalogue.

The main theme of this important Chinese painter is rendered here in a wonderful, light-filled manner: the body (and spirit) of man in space and its painterly interpretation.

The wonderful blue of the water provides the perfect backdrop for the painter's appealingly perspective-rich vision. The longing to let oneself drift is intertwined here in a psychologically profound way with the sometimes felt instability of human existence. Ingenious!

„Perhaps these works reveal what I have been indifferent to in the past. The facing of certain taboos has pushed me to look at human beings from a new perspective. Not only is the expressive space developed in these paintings. But also an imagery area, strange and abundant, displays a world that is seemingly fragmentary but very vivid. The important thing is that this world is not far away from an area that is already known. It seems there is a channel linking reality and dream. Making these surrealistic and experimental scenes possible and providing a real scale for my free images.“
