Karl Gerstner wurde 1930 in Basel geboren und verstarb 2017 am selben Ort. Gerstner studierte in den 1960er-Jahren an der Allgemeinen Gewerbeschule Basel bei Emil Ruder. Er war Mitbegründer der Werbeagentur "GGK", lange Zeit eine der erfolgreichsten Agenturen der Schweiz und später Deutschlands. Später zog sich Gerstner aus der Werbung zurück und engagierte sich im Verlagswesen. Er war arbeitete mit an den Wirtschaftsmagazinen Capital und impulse. Zu Gerstners bekanntesten Werken gehört das 1963 erschienene Buch 'Programme Entwerfen'. Im Jahr 1964 wurden Arbeiten von ihm auf der documenta III in Kassel in der Abteilung Graphik, und auch 1968 auf der 4. documenta gezeigt. Sein Archiv befindet sich seit 2006 in der Graphischen Sammlung der Schweizerischen Nationalbibliothek. Karl Gerstner was a theoretically, programmatically and systematically working designer and artist. His respective groups of works and projects are preceded by meticulous scientific and artistic studies and drafts.
The drawing offered here, executed in colour and pencil, explores the possibilities of the "AlgoRhythm" system.
The group of works "AlgoRhythmus" was created in 1969/70. The guiding idea was the development of the "total image" - a changeable image that can be altered in many ways by combining different, overlapping mounts, depending on the specific execution. Similar to the "Color Sounds", Gerstner also explored the harmony of different colour tones - this time on the basis of circular shapes.
"Als ich die Idee auf diese Weise eingegrenzt hatte, fand ich Kreisstrukturen von hoher symmetrischer Regelmäßigkeit, aus denen beliebige, auch asymmetrische Formen abzuleiten sind. Der Witz dabei: daß diese Formen stets bündig zueinander passen. In welcher Reihenfolge man sie auch immer aufeinanderlegt, wie man sie auch dreht und wendet, stets tangierend sich die Kreissegmente und laufen mit 0 Grad ineinander über. Daher kommt auch der Name: 'AlgoRhythmus' ist eine Verfremdung von Algorithmus = Automatismus einer Rechenoperation."
