PHUNK (auch bekannt als Phunk Studio) ist ein in Singapur ansässiges Kollektiv für zeitgenössische Kunst und Design, das 1994 von Alvin Tan (*1974), Melvin Chee (*1974), JacksonTan (b*1974) und William Chan (*1973) gegründet wurde. Die Mitglieder von PHUNK lernten sich als Designstudenten am LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapur kennen, wo sie Visuelle Kommunikation studierten. Ursprünglich hatten sie vor, während ihres Studiums eine Band zu gründen, entschieden sich dann aber dafür, ein Kunstkollektiv zu gründen. PHUNK ist bekannt für seinen experimentellen Ansatz bei Projekten, bei denen verschiedene Kontexte und Symbole kombiniert werden, um eine unverwechselbare Bildsprache und ein einzigartiges System zu schaffen. Bis heute haben sie in den Bereichen Kunst, Design, Verlagswesen, Mode, Musik, Film und interaktive Kunst gearbeitet und dabei Medien wie Siebdruck, Mixed-Media-Arbeiten und Skulpturen bis hin zu Acryl-, Holz- und Vinylfiguren erforscht. Das Kollektiv hat mit Künstlern, Designern und Modemarken auf der ganzen Welt ausgestellt und zusammengearbeitet und dabei Werke in einer Vielzahl von Medien geschaffen. PHUNK wurde zwischen 2001 und 2006 sechs Jahre in Folge von Promax Asia mit Gold- und Silbermedaillen ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2007 wurde das Kollektiv beim President's Design Award in Singapur mit dem Designer of the Year Award ausgezeichnet. The PHUNK collective are the stars and leading figures of Singapore's younger design and art scene. Their style, influenced by international trends, combines pop culture with humour and art.
The protagonist of the picture ‘Army of Love’ is certainly very enthusiastic about his four creators. Dressed in uniform and carrying a drum, the matchstick soldier beats the rhythm for love – on the back of his equipment, the Chinese character for affection or love, ‘情’, can be read.
This high-quality screen print on canvas is probably one of a kind – there are other colour variations. Individual parts of the picture are covered with diamond dust, giving the surface a wonderful shimmer.
