Gary Hume wurde 1962 in Tenterden, England geboren. Hume studierte am Liverpool Polytechnic (heute Liverpool John Moores University) sowie am Goldsmiths’ College, London wo er im Jahr 1988 seinen Abschluss machte. Ende der 1980er Jahre wurde er mit der Gruppe der Young British Artists (YBAs) international bekannt. In seinen Motiven zeigt er alltägliche Themen, zu deren Darstellung er Hochglanz-Industrielacke verwendete. Seine ersten auffallenden Arbeiten waren seine 'door paintings' (Türmalereien) - lebensgroße Darstellungen von Krankenhaustüren. Diese erwiesen sich vor allem in Deutschland und den USA als großer Erfolg. Mitte der 1990er Jahre, wandte sich Hume von seinen Türmalereien ab und widmete sich fortan Malereien mit Haushaltslacken auf Aluminiumplatten. Hauptmotive waren dabei berühmte Persönlichkeiten sowie Tiere, deren Formen und Farben Hume drastisch vereinfachte. Ab 2005 entdeckte Gary Hume seine Türmalereien neu, indem er die Türen vermenschlichte und sie in verschiedensten Liebespaar-Szenen darstellte. Hume vertrat sein Heimatland Großbritannien im Jahr 1999 auf der Biennale in Venedig. Gary Hume lebt und arbeitet in London und New York. Hume became known early in his career for painting everyday figures in glossy enamel paint on metal plates. In this edition, published in 2001, he ingeniously transfers his working method to the medium of printmaking.
The doubled and slightly shifted outline of a female figure is screen-printed onto a colour-coated aluminium plate. The composition is rendered in various shades of green and is particularly appealing to the eye thanks to the alternation of reflective and matt surfaces.
‘Psyche’ is the Greek word for ‘soul’. In mythology, a particularly beautiful king's daughter, who becomes the lover and wife of the god Cupid, bears this name. The couple becomes a symbol of sensual and immortal love.
The edition, limited to 400 copies, was produced by K2 Screen, London, and is equipped with a rear bracket for wall mounting.
