A synthesis of nature and knowledge
In 1985, the Brockhaus publishing house was able to persuade Hundertwasser to design a special edition of the Brockhaus. The idea behind it was to understand an encyclopaedia as a total work of art consisting of nature and knowledge. The initially planned two years eventually turned into four years, during which the Austrian artist presented various design ideas and realisation requests. A total of 24 colourful watercolours ultimately form the basis for the woven book cover, from which the 24 volumes of the reference work are made by hand. He also envisages a painting for each background, which is then applied to the fabric during production.
Only in this impressive collage of all 24 bindings designed by Hundertwasser in interaction can one recognise the big picture - the coherence in the artist's design, which is achieved via the black flowing, widely branching line structure as a connecting element between all the book volumes.
The Brockhaus Encyclopaedia is listed in the Hundertwasser catalogue raisonné under APA number 246. The Hundertwasser Foundation Vienna does not issue certificates for designs. However, the authenticity of the work is not in doubt.
