Features and Remarks
Powerful strokes and broad, smudged areas imbue this painting with great dynamism, revealing Kozik’s keen sensitivity to the medium. Kozik employs charcoal and white chalk to create a striking contrast along the right edge of the composition.
The work is titled "Im Feuer vergangen" (Perished in the Fire) and is dedicated to Leon Weliczker, a Holocaust survivor and witness. In his diary and during several trials, Weliczker recounted the murders committed by the Germans in the Lemberg area. The title likely alludes to his testimony regarding the exhumation and burning of the victims murdered by the SS.
A stooped figure is faintly visible beneath the black veils. On the right, a white beam cuts through the dark, underlying memory.
„The human figure remains an unanswerable mystery to me. I perceive history as a flow that constantly repeats itself in different forms—a flow to which the individual relates within their own time. An artist with something to say can no more escape history and the sum of individual experiences than anyone else.“
Gregor-Torsten Kozik (Conversation with M. Flügge in the catalogue "Tenebrae", 1996)
The figurative-abstract composition is characterized by the interplay of light and dark. Gestural elements in the line work remain discernible. This work dates from a particularly dynamic and productive phase of the artist's career in the 1980s—shortly before the end of the GDR.
The authenticity of the work has been confirmed by expert assessment.Informations about the artwork

Gregor-Torsten Kozik (until 1980 Gregor-Torsten Schade, also Schade-Adelsberg) was born in Hildburghausen in 1948. Kozik was a founding member of the avant-garde East German artists' group 'Clara Mosch' from 1977 to 1982. Since 1975 he has had numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and museums and was represented at renowned international art fairs, among others Art Cologne, Art Basel and Arco Madrid. 'Gregor-Torsten Kozik is a multi-artist, he plays with the media and pulls at its borders, the literature, the metaphor, the symbolist subtlety are the ingredients of his imagery, which he only rarely to read Motive drives. Rather, Kozik creates poetic fields in which we can move, guided not by the linguistic, but by the visual. ' Matthias Flügge |
