James Rizzi wurde 1950 in New York geboren und verstarb 2011 am selben Ort. Rizzi wuchs in New York auf. Ab 1969 studierte er Kunst an der University of Florida in Gainesville. Schon während seines Studiums beschäftigte er sich mit der Kombination von Malerei und Skulptur und entwickelte schließlich die von ihm häufig angewandte Technik der 3D-Grafik. Nachdem er 1974 sein Studium abschloss, hatte er zum ersten Mal die Gelegenheit seine Arbeiten im New Yorker Brooklyn Museum zu präsentieren. Seine Popularität wuchs und immer mehr Galerien und Museen begannen sich für seine Werke zu interessieren. Neben der Malerei widmete sich Rizzi auch der Gestaltung von CD-Covern, Animations-Musik-Videos, Telefonwertkarten und Rosenthal-Porzellan. Rizzi erhielt für sein Werk zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Zu Lebzeiten war er einer der populärsten zeitgenössischen Künstler der Pop-Art.
