Daniel Richter gehört zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Künstlern der Gegenwart. Er wurde 1962 in Eutin geboren, studierte an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg von 1992-1996 bei Professor Werner Büttner und arbeitete als Assistent von Albert Oehlen. Von 2004 bis 2006 bekleidete er die Professur für Malerei an der Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Nachdem er diese vorzeitig niedergelegt hatte, übernahm er 2006 den Lehrstuhl für erweiterten malerischen Raum an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. Richter lebt und arbeitet wechselnd in Berlin, Hamburg und Wien.

Daniel Richters Gemälde waren bis 2000 ausschließlich abstrakt. Ab diesem Jahr erobern erste figurative Formen seine Werke.
Der Künstler selbst dazu: "Das hat sich irgendwie verselbständigt. Am Anfang war dieses Fleckenhafte, das kennt man ja zum Beispiel von Filmen, wenn die durchschmoren. Eigentlich sind es immer die paranoiden Blicke: Infrarot! Drogen! Geistererscheinungen! Hightech-Nachtsichtgeräte, Leute kommen vom Dunklen ins Helle, dieser Kram. Der Ursprung waren die Blicke, die eigentlich jeder kennt, die in der Malerei aber nicht auftauchen und die ich immer als beunruhigend wahrgenommen habe. Das ist so eine Ebene, wo man weiß, da liegt irgendeine Bedrohung, ein Geheimnis, irgendeine Offenbarung.“ ('Die meisten Maler sind doof“, in: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung vom 22. April 2007)

Daniel Richter painted exclusively abstractly until 2000. One of his first figurative paintings from this year is "Phienox", which shows a crowd of people scaling a wall in a fiery, luminous landscape. This large-scale masterpiece presents the wall motif as one of the leitmotifs of Richter's painting. Further wall paintings follow...

The subject inevitably evokes associations with recent German history and the "fall of the Wall". But it can also be interpreted as a general allegory of the struggle and overcoming of resistance and obstacles.

Here we see a high wall made of black, round stones, which is surmounted by four figures. The wall seems to extend into the blackness of the night sky and seem insurmountable, but together the figures climb and leap over the structure.

The fire of the glowing red, yellow, orange and blue silhouettes fuels the surreal scenery. Who knows what's on the other side? Is it an escape or a nocturnal adventure that we are witnessing here?

The oil colours are applied broadly and almost glazed in places - their style adds another layer of energetic tension to the picture.

The painting bears the gallery stamp of the artist's long-standing exclusive representation on the reverse.

The hand-signed unique piece is mounted in a beautiful wooden frame and is in very good condition.
